Black Hills, Badlands, and Lakes

The official National Park Service site for Mount Rushmore, which is more than just the faces (though they're certainly impressive). You'll love the trails, the surrounding mountains and, if you're only a little bit lucky, the mountain goats.

Another great destination for less than great weather. Wind Cave offers several tours. They can keep you busy all day even if you don't spend any time admiring the abundant wildlife in the above-ground portion of the park
Originally called the "Rails to Trails" project, This trail which stretches across western South Dakota south to north along the old railway bed. Besides spectacular scenery and historical interest, the Mickelson trail offers a consistent, minimal grade suitable for hikers and cyclists of all ages and fitness levels.
Stretching from Wind Cave Park in the south to Bear Butte in the north, The Centennial trail offers yet another cross section of the Black Hills. Some sections are easy to moderate, others hard to harder, all beautiful.

If the history of gold in the Black Hills fascinates you, as it does so many visitors, you won't want to miss a trip to Lead, SD to tour the surface areas of the famous Homestake Gold mine. While you're there, your hosts recommend lunch or dinner at one of their favorite restaurants, the Stamp Mill.
A yearly autumn pilgrimage for many local people, Spearfish Canyon is beautiful in all seasons; a dream for fly fishing, hiking, cycling, and one of the most gorgeous sunday drives you'll ever take. You can also visit Roughlock Falls park and view the famous "Winter Camp" from Dances with Wolves.
About twenty miles north of Jenny Gulch is the quintessential wild west town: Deadwood, South Dakota. Even if you're not into gambling, you'll love Deadwood in the daytime for its museums, gift shops and historic graveyard, and at night for its frequent special events.
